Your average playoff game is full of drama and excitement and this one was no different. Grum won the toss and decided to receive. I deployed the deathroller hoping for a quick score (or turnover!) and got a blitz. This put Jon in trouble and he was forced into a three-turn score. Plenty of time for a first half equaliser, I thought. Not quite as it turned out.
A killed longbeard from a thrown rock (I'd already used the apo on a MB guarding casualty) followed by another dead longbeard put the dwarves straight on the backfoot. It was nine aside for a while there, but that gave the sidestepping catchers (who refused to go down) and Jon's ST4 uber-blitzer/guarder more room to operate and if anything, the dwarves were a tad fortunate to only be one down at the half as their pocket collapsed.
Second half - the dwarves meant business and were players up this time. A couple of both down sticks and some lazy blocking gave the humans a chance. They needed several one dicers, a few dodges and then a one dice pop on the ball, needing flash/flashdown. But they got it and even danced along the sideline, picking the ball up on a couple of 3s without reroll. The dwarves had one blitz to remedy the situation and needed a knockdown after a dodge to rescue the game. They just got it, but the luck reversed itself again when Jon (down to 7 by this time) went for the win with a one-dice blitzing, multi-dodging, picking up in tacklezone play. It worked and they were in for 2-0. Dwarves had five turns to equalise. It might have been on if the ball had scattered off from its position RIGHT in the corner, but in stayed on and two failed pass attempts later (and Jon's luck was even worse snake-eying twice) left only time for one consolation TD. Well played Jon. A good team, a good coach and about time some of the luck I've had against him in previous games has righted itself.
Very tough game vs ALT.
The game came down to two moments.
1st half, ALT (AG3) needed a dodge, pick up in tackle zone, dodge, dodge, GFI to score and failed the 3rd dodge.
2nd half, I needed (All AG3) a dodge, pick up, long bomb, catch (plus a couple of bonus dodges to release players to protect the ball carrier). Got them all and the score.
That left ALT 2 turns to level the match. Perfect D left him up sh*t street.
Thanks for a great game mate.
So much to try and include in a match report! However, the result everyone is interested in is that I managed to win 5-4 on penalties after overtime still couldn't seperate the score. I have to say that I was barely hanging in there and was aided massively when those Double Skulls kept popping up for Leo.
Leo - it was an absolutley great game, many thanks!
Well, quite frankly an epic game. One where we were in several position to convert and never quite had that clutch luck to close off the game; coupled with 4 double skulls at direly critical moments (twice with no reroll, as ag rolls were generally pretty low (on both teams).
1st half: Lee received, we played aggressive man on man forcing him to shoot down the side; at the start of turn 3, he stretched his ball carrying ghoul as a first action and 1 rr 1'ed to spill the ball. We recovered and caged up in the middle, but had to stretch a little to return for a defensive TD. It wasn't to be as he pulled back his annoying blodge sidestepper; with our remaining option being a 1dice block (minimum push needed), 3+ dodge and 2+ gf to score; alas with no rr it wasn't to be. Still receiving next half, not so bad.
2nd half: Lee hits a blitz and floods our back field. A worthy effort and he had about 3 players in our half, witha 4th stumbling a gfi. We knocked to down and semi caged in the middle; allowing us to screen his positional players back in our half so our blitzer could nip through and score, however we were forced to score turn 3. Given we'd been blitzed, pretty happy with that, coupled with Lee having no remaining rr's.
Lees' reception and 4 KOs come back, leaving 5 turns to score and a full deck. He shot up the side, we swept the defense right and popped the ball, leaving the ball in two of our TZs and Lee with limited options. He tried the 5+ pu, 5+ dg (in tackle) but then floored the subsequent 4+ dodge to spill. We had their only available scorer marked with one man, but rue not picking up another player to mark him, as we double skulled the blitz on a fellow positional. Still with no rr's, Lee needed a blitz, a 4+ pu a 3+ dodge and a 3+ ho..... could he? Course he could. And so to overtime.
Lost the toss, but with no one with any rrs, it was real mans Blood Bowl. And we managed to stave off their advance, (indeed lobbed the gobbo at one point) but with no rr's and anoth double skull, were reduced to trying to lob the ball to the goblin as a last resort (last turn was interesting, as Lee tried to blitz the gobbo out of the endzone, only to double skull, leaving us to attempt a 3+ 3+ 3+ to score, to no avail.
End of OT and we rolled I hit a 4 and Lee hit a 5. End of an epic game, as i said. I think we could feel hard done by as Lee was on the back foot for most of the game, but he dug in and did what he had to do which paid off for him. Would be nice to actually win against you for once, me old mucka, but not to be this time around!!! Will be keeping this team for the Open :)
Grum chose to kick, promtly rolled Perfect D and from there it was one way all night. I was 2 CAS down by turn 2 and whilst I have to acknowledge the block dice were even all night for both of us, jeez what armor rolls Jon had! Sooo many 9's and yes, in fairness not that many KO's or CAS in return but in both halves he took 2 players off in his first turn and with so many stuns I was never in this. When I did try something (once in each half) I rolled double 2 for the dodge as I was blitzing the ball carrier.
So, cant complain at that... there was perhaps one moment in the 2H where I had Jon under pressure and maybe just maybe could have got something but my dice went pushes and then Jon made a mass of rolls without failing and that then lead to a double two dodge to blitz the ball. As often the case, my best dice where late 2H when it didnt matter. It happens, I have been the other side of the table when I have seen some of you guys have a game like this.
Phew. Tough game and really could have gone either way. Unfortunately horrible luck right at the death did for the elfs.
Richy started with the ball and decided on the quick score as the remainder of his team started to be encircled by might blow/guard combos. In retrospect he needn't have worried as his elves were fairly resilient all the way through but 1-0 it was. The dwarves made light of a short kick and some poor elven blocking to run in for 1-1.
But the drama was the second half. The dwarves had to field a deep kick and a riot had already taken a turn off. Good elven defence made the dwarves fight for every square and they weren't proceeding anywhere quick enough to get a winner. So in my T6 I followed up a couple of extra blocks and looked to stretch the game. This gave Richy his first opp to hit my ST4 ball carrier one dice but he snake-eyed the dodge. The dwarves had a so-so turn speeding up the pitch but only one was in range and Richy could get to him, just. He also had a man in range should be ball go on the floor. It was do or die. Turned out it was die as the first roll was another snake-eye dodge. Tough on Richy. A good team and totally let down by dice at a point where there was no time for a comeback.
This game was lost until my final turn of normal time. Only a Bob was in range for an equaliser and I needed to clear TZs off the ball and open a route for a pass - with no reroll. Nuffle had taunted me all game only to gift me the BS TD in the dieing seconds. The game went to OT and the Orcs won the toss. The fans invaded the pitch and set about the Humie players allowing Shock to make a urge down the left flank. Valiant defending blocked all routes for a winning TD until Turn 6 when Shock made a break for the line - an all or nothing with no cover needing a handoff, a dodge and two GFIs all on 2 ups. The Blitzewr sneaked in to secure the win, somewhat harshly, over National Disaster.
1st half I received and pulled off my normal throw the ball on the floor manouver. Al blitzes in but catches the ball with the same player. I splat him with the dauntless catcher and recover and pass in tow TZ. His diving tackle and tackle players give me grief all half, but I somehow keep the ball safe and put myself in range in turn 7. Al though responds with some AG4 blitzing and my ball carrier is down. I have a push to make and then a pick up in a TZ, but fail the pick up on a double 1. Not even close.
2nd half, Al throws the ball on the floor and I' all over it. a couple of failed pick ups between us and I manage to run away for the lead. Al has 3 to score, I kick shallow but Shock and Awk make a pigs ear of making progress with the ball. After a couple of tense blocks, I have the chose of making it difficult or making it impossible. I go for the later but skull out on the 1 dicer. Al promptly picks up and throws to the waiting black orc who double GFI's into the EZ. So Extra time. Nadgers.
I lose the toss, kick a touch back and get pitch invaded 4 to 1. Big nadgers.
I hold Al off for 5 or 6 turns but he eventually hands off to the AG4 Btz and double GFIs in again.
Al deserved it overall, but up against the skills he had (which were my team's anti-skills) I was surprised to be in with such a good shot as I had.
Well played Al, and good luck, another great game in 100% the right spirit.
